LBA SCHOLARSHIPS! (2012)

Once again, the LBA will be offering scholarships to the children of active and retired members. Scholarship awards will be based on the students SAT scores from any single days testing.The following scholarships will be awarded:

TWO (2) $ 3,000 scholarships to be awarded. One to the male student with the highest SAT score, and the other to the female student with highest SAT score.

TWO (2) $ 2,500 scholarships. This will be awarded to each second place male and female student.

TWO (2) $ 2,000 scholarships. This will be awarded to each third place male and female student.

To be eligible, the student must be a high school senior,and must send a copy of his/hers SAT scores the LBA office by Tuesday, May 31, 2012, (Attention Gene Loewy).

You MUST call the LBA Office soon after mailing the SAT scores to confirm that we did in fact receive them.

Winners will be notified and awards will be given at Belmont Raceway Breakfast meeting in June. In case of ties, monies will be split among the highest scores achieved on any single day.

Merging scores from different days will not be counted.

Police Reserve Association Annual Scholarship Examination (2012)

Police Reserve Association city of New York Annual Scholarship Examination and Awards Ceremony.

On Wednesday March 28, 2012, from 6-9 p.m., the Police Reserve Association will hold its annual College Scholarship Examination at the Police Academy 235 east 20th street, N.Y. N.Y. 10003.

There will be eight awards given. One $2,500, two @ $1,500 and five @ $1,000. The exam will be administered by Police Reserve Association board members and graded by an impartial national testing agency. The exam is open to college bound high school seniors, who will be attending a two or four year college and be matriculated during the period from September 1, 2012 until August 31, 2013. Proof of acceptance to the school must be provided before awards can be claimed.

The examination is open to sons and daughters of active, retired, living and deceased U.M.O.S. of the N.Y.P.D. This exam is not open to civilian members of the Department.

Winners will be notified in May 2012 and the awards presentations will take place in June 2012. Exact date of presentation to be determined at a later date.

All applications must be in by February 29, 2012 to be eligible to take the exam.

EUGEN GRABSCHEID SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Eugen Grabscheid Scholarship Fund provides funding for dependent children of uniformed and civilian members of the New York City Police Department who are studying to become medical doctors, dentists, psychiatrist, psychologist, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, or veterinarians. The scholarship(s) are for the 2012-2013 school year and may be for either undergraduate or graduate studies. Scholarship recipients are not required to be residents of New York City or to attend New York City colleges or universities.

To be eligible, candidates’ parents or guardians must be active or retired civil service employees of the New York City Police Department. Children of deceased members of the service are also eligible to apply. Applicant(s) must be accepted as full-time matriculated student(s) at a private or public college/university for one of the majors listed above. Awards will be based on scholastic achievement, leadership and commitment to the medical profession, community service activities and financial need.

A completed Police Foundation application must be submitted along with an official high school and college transcript if applicable, a transcript of most recent official school semester (if different from one of the above)*, letter of recommendation from a teacher, professor or supervisor, copy of Financial Aid Award letter*, copy of the family’s 2011 tax return*, and submit an essay maximum of one page as stated on the application form.

*For renewal of last year’s scholarship, submit the completed application along with required documentation. Previous scholarship recipients must submit a new essay each year.

MANFRED PAKAS SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Manfred Pakas Scholarship Fund is for the education of children of New York City uniformed personnel who have died in the line of duty. To be eligible, children may be married or unmarried between the ages of 14 to 24, they must be presently enrolled in or accepted by an accredited college or university in pursuit of a diploma or undergraduate degree, families may submit an application for every child that meets the eligibility requirements, scholarships are not restricted to residents of New York City or New York City colleges and universities.

*Past Manfred Pakas scholarship recipients, who still meet the eligibility requirements, must reapply if they wish to be considered for a 2012-2013 scholarship.

Awards will be based on academic excellence, financial need and career interests. Since the amount of funds available for the scholarship varies from year to year, the number of scholarships awarded varies as well. Therefore, all who meet the eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply.
