PBA Arbitration Remarks - LBA Contract Reopener (May 23, 2008)
The PBA received their arbitration award for 2004-2006 on Monday, May 19, 2008. The PBA was awarded a 4.5% and 5% raise for the two years, and the starting salary for new police officers will increase to $35,881.
The uniformed pattern was 3% and 3.15%. While the PBA raises were higher, they came at a cost.
The following are the give backs:
1) Newly hired police officers will forfeit ten(10) vacation days for the first five(5) years;
2) Rescheduling tours for all police officers will increase from fifteen(15) tours to twenty(20) tours;
3) Range days for all police officers will be scheduled on a vacation day;
4) The Department will have the right to reschedule tours for all police officers on six(6) holidays without having to pay overtime for the rescheduling.
The LBA does have a reopener clause which covers this round of bargaining associated with the PBA arbitration. Our labor attorney, Joel Glanstein, has started to review the PBA award, most importantly-- the values associated with the give backs.
The LBA will look at this arbitration award, how it will effect our members, and set up a strategy to move forward.
NASSAU COUNTY COP KILLER UP FOR PAROLE AGAIN! (May 9, 2008)
NEW CHIEF OF PERSONNEL MEMO! (March 28, 2008)
ANABOLIC STEROID AND HUMAN GROWTH HORMONE USE
A memo has been issued by the Chief of Personnel regarding the proliferation of anabolic steroids and human growth hormones. (Finest message dated 3/26/2008)
LBA members should read this Personnel Bureau Memo in its entirety.
This memo refers to the physical and professional dangers inherent in abusing anabolic steroids and HGH.
It goes on to state that there are some legitimate medical uses for anabolic steroids,and that synthetic HGH is only available by prescription.
Bodybuilding and/or body enhancement are not legitimate medical uses of anabolic steroids and related substances.
If dosages of these substances are prescribed by a physician for a member of the service and he/she is tested for drugs by the Department, the member will be required to provide the Department with information sufficient to determine if the prescription was written for a legitimate medical condition.
It is the Drug Enforcement Agency’s and the NYPD’s position that obtaining any controlled substance or a prescription for a controlled substance without a bona fide doctor/patient relationship is illegal and subjects the member to disciplinary action. Completing a questionnaire that is simply reviewed by a physician hired by, or working on behalf of, an Internet pharmacy does not establish a legitimate doctor/patient relationship.
Therefore, any member of the service found to be abusing anabolic steroids/HGH will be subject to disciplinary action.
Again, we suggest that members be aware of this memo and read it in its entirety!
